Yanni's Q & A: Frumpy-to-Fab When Mixing Prints
A dear friend of mine asked me a question concerning prints and I felt the need to share:
Q: How come when I try to mix and match different patterns I come off looking homeless but I see celebs do it and they look Fab? Is there a correct way to mix and match different patterns or should this just not be done?
A: First and foremost, mix and matching prints should definitely be done if they are done right. It gives a newfound personality to something that is old and/or boring and it adds a certain spice to something new and/or simple. The key, I think, to mix and matching prints is to have a balance and in the end produce a cohesive look. Throwing too many prints together usually produces a tacky mess and not throwing enough prints into the mix usually does not give you the outcome you expected.
Tips I Follow:
For starters, the best thing to do when analyzing the right prints to mix and match is to think about the color scheme. Pallettes are everything. Keeping the color family consistent with prints helps the flow of the outfit. Secondly, vary the scale of the prints you are wearing. You can have a small neat print as a top and something bolder on the bottom or as an add on. You can also have on a bold print and throw something smaller in as an add on. Lastly, do not forget accessories. Accessories are a key element to any fit and you want to be mindful of them when you are mix and matching your prints. The perfect balance is key. Having too many prints in one outfit and then throwing in a printed accessory whether it be a headpiece, bag, scarf or jewelry can definitely clash with everything else.
At the end of the day the real question you have to ask yourself is "Do I dare to be bold?".
Mix and matching prints is a fun and bold way to express your style. Not to mention there is some trial and error involved. So if you follow the tips mentioned and give it a few tries you'll definitely be able to answer that question. Before you know it you'll realize not just celebs can be fab wearing prints.
