In Memory Of...

Dedication Blog: Memory of M.J

Who knew today would be the unexpected passing of "The Pop Legend" Michael Jackson. I can honestly say I am deeply saddened by this. I mean in all honestly everyone had their gripes with Michael whether it be family, friends, and/or fans, but at the end of the day he was still MICHAEL JACKSON. I truly feel that his personal life and his career were two separate entities.

I mean let's be real, I grew up on M.J. I remember my dad had the huge ass A track records of all his past albums. We would spend weeknds jamming to M.J for hours. VH1 Soul has been playing his videos all morning. Every video they play I'm like "that was my jam". He has a ton of hits its so hard to have a favorite. Although my favorites are PYT, Beat It, Remember The Time & Liberian Girl. He was "The Greatest Pop Legend" in my opinion, of all time and that is how he should be remembered.

I thought about doing this blog because I had a story to share concerning M.J and figured this would be the perfect place to share it. So a few months back in one of my classes at F.I.T we were given a final project of styling a celebrity for various events. The flip side to that is my teacher (a professional stylist) assigned us the celebrity and events randomly. Guess who I got?

Mhmmmm M.J's crazy self. At first I was a bit nervous because this is M.J after all. He is like the King of costumes. His everyday attire consists of costumes. How the hell was I supposed to come up with three ensembles for him with a more modern touch? That was definitely the million dollar question on my mind for weeks. Not to mention the events I was assigned were random as all hell: He was the host for the country music awards and had to have two outfit changes and he was a guest on Ellen's show. SMDH. I was definitely stuck. However, as usual I figured it out and came up with some great looks, passed and left an inspiring mark for such a quick random mock look book. I think M.J would have been proud.

Michael Jackson was a legend and will definitely be missed. I grew up with him and he touched many in various ways. There will NEVER be another like him. I will continue to jam to his songs on a daily basis in my blue ipod nano. He's my personal star.

To Match or Not To Match?!?!

Hey Ppl,

So your girl is finally back from PR. 5 days definitely felt like a long time, but then not long enough. Isn’t it always like that? Sigh. I so need another vacation. Anyways, now that I’m back in NYC its time to get back on the grind.

Before I left I had to send some pictures over to a photographer I will be collaborating with soon on a shoot and I also sent them to the model. Thus far everything is a “green light” for the look. This shoot will be a high glam retro look. Depending on the hair it could go more high glam or more retro. Right now we are in the process of working out the particulars ya know: location, time, MUA, hair, etc. Sometimes this process can go quicker than I would like and sometimes it can drag, but what can you do right? At the end of the day we all have the same end goal: to create a work of art (or something damn near close to it). So if it takes s a little bit more time to get the ball rolling then time is what it will be.

Aside from that, I have gotten a few more inquiries from prospective people wanting to work with me. Not bad at all. As I have said before in previous post this spring/summer is all about building my port with a flare of versatility. Hmm I like that. I want my port to incorporate a lot of different styles and elements, but still come together cohesively. So “Flair of Versatility” it is.

Speaking of cohesiveness, I want to take a minute to touch on a subject that bothers me. Matching. People have a lot of misconceptions when it comes to matching. Back in the day there was an understanding for the most part that “to match was the IT thing”. I am not going to lie it probably was always a semi-tacky thing, but it still was in for a hot decade or so; however, in this new millennium we all live in, matching down to the T is a negative, but not everyone can getaway with matching none of the pieces they are wearing. It can definitely be a catch 22 if you let it which is why cohesiveness is important.

Key element: Cohesive

Pieces can work together in perfect harmony regardless if you have several patterns, colors, styles as long as it ties together cohesively. Now don’t go crazy thinking you can come outside looking like a fabric store blew up on you, but if put together the correct way pieces can work. It’s called being cohesive (making sure the element(s) tie in together and having/knowing the color palette. With that said, the key element for this post is cohesiveness. Can’t live without it so do not even try.

Back to the grind.

Stuff & Packing Gripes

So a week or two back I treated myself to a little retail therapy. It was very therapeutic might I add. Anyways, I got these great black leather slingback pumps. Then the other day I got Coach rain boots on sale. That was definitely a long term investment that could not be ignored. Well when I came home after getting the boots I thought "where the hell am I going to put them? My room is like a walk in closet I didn't ask for, but fell for. Now when I get the closet like "Carrie" got in Sex and the City then I'll be head over in love.

Well back to the matter at hand, so it made me realize how many stuff I had. Like I have a lot of shyt. I mean its all great because I believe every piece of clothing (from the accessories to the shoes) is important and you can never have too much. Let's be honest here, there will always be an opportunity for a great fit.

However, at the end of the day I still have a lot of stuff.

Surprisingly, packing tonight for PR has been a pleasant breeze. Yes I am going to PR. A necessary getaway. I need a travel therapy like nobodies business. It was dire. So PR it is. Back to packing, usually I detest packing/unpacking. It's too much shyt to do for someone as lazy as me with her own stuff. But it had to be done at some point and it went well. I'm proud of myself :-)

I love organization and convenience. I like to work smarter not harder. That's definitely key.

So I can honestly say that for once I am content with the pieces I packed, but not happy. Most of the time I am happy about the outfits I put together and can't wait to wear them. The outfits for this trip? Not so much.

The lesson in this situation = Accessories

Accessories are key.

Loading up on accessories in a subtle cohesive chic way can make simple too casual pieces look like a possible red carpet classic. Accessories work wonders.
